Chapter Thirty-Nine

The storm moved on in minutes after Bashuan’s death. It gave Shaun the chills, the way Nature seemed to have played a part in the night’s events. The fury of the storm had been intense, and he along with his mates had felt it, anger and rage almost palpable on the air. He’d never thought it was directed at them, though, and indeed, the storm had made it possible for them to sneak into the lepe camp.

“What now?” he murmured, turning away from the dead asshole to look at Steven and Cole.

Both of them were okay, relatively unharmed except for a few scrapes and bruises, and a layer of soot here and there. The building behind them continued to burn, unaffected by the rain.

Steven opened up his arms. Shaun darted right into them, holding out one arm toward Cole. They stood together, touching, breathing, trying to comprehend this change in their lives. In Steven’s life.

“I feel…” Steven hesitated after barely whispering those two words. He shivered, and Shaun tried to soothe him with easy caresses to his back, soft kisses to his neck and shoulder. “Dizzy. I don’t know. I can’t… I’ve never not had to worry about him wanting me dead.”

“It’s a lot to take in,” Shaun murmured. “He’s dead and can’t hurt you or Adal ever again.”

Steven grunted and tightened his hold on Shaun and Cole. Shaun held onto his mates and closed his eyes. His life had become so much more. Years of loving Cole and, though he hated to admit it, being mad at the Fates for denying him Cole as a mate, and yet he was rewarded in such in incredible way.

Shaun swore then to live his life as honestly and lovingly as he could. No more carrying grudges or getting mad at little things. Even with the big things, he’d try to control his temper and talk them out.

Besides, he really liked talking almost as much as he liked fucking, and he had two gorgeous, perfect mates to—

“Excuse me, sir.”

Shaun’s eyes popped open and he turned his head slightly to peer at the owner of that timid voice.

A big older man knelt in front of Steven, about ten feet away. The man kept his gaze averted, and had his hands folded in front of his groin. He was also nude, and too thin, as if he were ill or malnourished. His wet, gray-streaked black hair clung to his skull.

“Who are you?” Steven asked, not letting up on his grip.

Shaun wiggled until he was turned more toward the stranger.

“I was one of his prisoners,” the man whispered, nodding toward Bashuan’s body. “The fire made the guards careless. They didn’t lock my cell.” He slowly raised his head.

Shaun had to work not to gasp at the man’s silvery-white irises. His eyes seemed to glow under the dappled moonlight breaking through the clouds. He wasn’t as old as he had first appeared.

“Who are you?” Steven repeated in a firmer voice.

Shaun, however, felt the fissure of unease rippling through Steven’s mind.
